Canna ‘Cleopatra’ is a striking hybrid cultivar celebrated for its unique variegation and unpredictable colour patterning. Originating from South American canna breeding lines, this plant often produces stems with both red and yellow flowers on the same plant, while its leaves vary between green and bronze with mottled streaks. Each clump develops lush, tropical foliage, creating a dramatic focal point in gardens or large containers. The variety’s distinctive, ever-changing appearance makes it a collector’s favourite among canna enthusiasts.

Plant Type

Rhizomatous perennial

A rhizomatous perennial, Canna ‘Cleopatra’ grows from underground rhizomes that store energy and allow it to regrow each spring. The plant combines tropical foliage with showy flowers, making it ideal for ornamental borders or water-adjacent garden areas. It behaves like a perennial in warm climates but is often treated as a tender plant in cooler regions where frost can damage the rhizomes.

Mature Height

90–180 cm (3–6 ft)

Canna ‘Cleopatra’ typically reaches 90–180 cm (3–6 ft) when mature, depending on growing conditions and soil fertility. In ideal conditions with plenty of sunlight and moisture, it can produce tall, vigorous stems crowned by colourful flower spikes. The substantial height and dense foliage make it excellent for creating tropical backdrops or screening features in garden designs.

Light Requirements

Full sun to partial shade

This canna thrives in full sun, where it produces its most vibrant leaf and flower colours. A minimum of six hours of direct sunlight daily encourages strong growth and abundant blooms. In partial shade, plants may still grow well but often display reduced flowering and less pronounced variegation. Warm, sunny locations are best for achieving the full ornamental potential of this cultivar.

Water Requirements

Moderate to high

Canna ‘Cleopatra’ enjoys consistent moisture and prefers rich, well-drained soil that remains slightly damp. Regular watering is essential during hot summer months, especially for container-grown plants. It tolerates short periods of waterlogging, making it suitable for pond edges or rain gardens. However, overwatering in cool conditions can lead to rhizome rot, so good drainage is important outside the growing season.

Cold Hardiness

-5°C (23°F)

Canna ‘Cleopatra’ is frost-tender, tolerating brief dips to around -5 °C (23 °F). In colder climates, rhizomes should be lifted after the first frost, dried, and stored in a cool, frost-free place over winter. In warmer regions, a thick mulch layer can protect rhizomes through mild winters. Without protection, frost can kill the plant, so overwintering care is crucial in temperate zones.

Propagation tips

Propagation is best done by dividing rhizomes in spring when growth resumes. Each division should include at least one healthy bud or “eye.” Replant divisions in moist, fertile soil once the risk of frost has passed. Rhizome pieces can also be started in pots indoors to establish early growth. Regular division every few years rejuvenates the clump and encourages vigorous flowering.
