Musella lasiocarpa, also known as the Chinese dwarf banana or golden lotus banana, is a striking ornamental species native to Yunnan, China. It is renowned for its lotus-like golden-yellow flower that can last for several months, often appearing before the leaves fully mature. The broad, paddle-shaped leaves add lush tropical character to gardens or container plantings. Despite its banana-like appearance, it is a distinct genus, related but separate from Musa and Ensete.

Plant Type

Large herbaceous perennial

This species is a small, herbaceous perennial from the Musaceae family, valued mainly for its long-lasting, ornamental flowers rather than fruit. Its compact growth and sculptural form make it ideal for container displays or tropical-themed borders. It behaves like a banana plant but remains smaller and more manageable, making it suitable for gardens in cooler climates when overwintered indoors.

Mature Height

1–1.5 m (3–5 ft)

Musella lasiocarpa typically grows to 1–1.5 m (3–5 ft) tall, forming a neat clump of pseudostems surrounded by large green leaves. Its compact size and architectural shape make it a versatile accent in small gardens or patios. When in bloom, the golden inflorescence stands above the foliage, adding an extra 30–40 cm (12–16 in) in height.

Light Requirements

Full sun to partial shade

This plant prefers full sun for the best flower and leaf development, though it tolerates partial shade, especially in hotter regions. Bright, consistent light encourages strong, upright growth and intensifies the colour of both leaves and flowers. In lower light conditions, the plant may elongate slightly and produce fewer blooms, so outdoor placement in sunny, sheltered spots is ideal.

Water Requirements

Moderate

Musella lasiocarpa thrives in moist, fertile soil with excellent drainage. It enjoys regular watering during active growth, especially in warm weather, but does not tolerate waterlogging. Keeping the soil evenly moist replicates its native monsoon-like conditions. During winter dormancy or cool indoor periods, watering should be reduced to prevent root rot.

Cold Hardiness

−5 °C (23 °F)

This plant is hardy to around −5 °C (23 °F) when well-mulched and protected, though foliage dies back after frost. In colder regions, it should be overwintered indoors or in a frost-free greenhouse. In mild climates, roots can survive outdoors if shielded from excessive winter wet and freezing. Protecting the crown ensures regrowth in spring.

Propagation tips

Propagation is best achieved by division of basal suckers once they have formed a few roots. Carefully separate offsets from the parent plant in spring or early summer and pot them individually in moist, well-draining compost. Seeds can also be used, but they germinate slowly and irregularly. Consistent warmth, humidity, and bright light promote successful establishment of young plants.
